Shahid Kapoor and Alia Bhatt starrer Udta Punjab has cleared the censor formalities after a long struggle on June 12 with only 13 cuts. Even with so many cuts, it has been given with adult only 'A’ certification. CBFC Chief Pahlaj Nihalani took it to news that the board has cleared the film with less number of cuts and it is the responsibility of the producers to face the court order which is to be passed on June 13.
If the order comes in favour of the team, the movie is likely to hit the screens on the slated date June 17. Directed by Abhishek Chaubey and produced jointly by Anurag Kashyap’s Phantom Films and Ekta Kapoor’s Balaji Motion Pictures, the plot is a controversial one dealing with the drug abuse among the youths of Punjab.
Though the film has thrown light on the real incidents at the state, the issue turned out to have political influence followed by severe censor formalities. Some had described it as showing Punjab in a 'negative limelight’ while those in the cine industry are all in support of the movie. Earlier the title itself was suggested to be changed to Udta Tommy removing every reference of Punjab. But looks like CBFC had come down from 89 to 13 cuts with no change in title finally.
