Isaipuyal A.R.Rahman has been garnering heaps of awards and praises from all over the world through his magical music. Now to add another feather to his hat, the prestigious Fukuoka Prize from Japan has been awarded to the Oscar Award Winner for the year 2016. The award is to honour his outstanding contribution to Asian culture through his music.
Other Indian artists who had previously won this prize includes sitarist Ravi Shankar, dancer Padma Subrahmanyam, historian Romila Thapar, sarod player Amjad Ali Khan and historian Ramachandra Guha. Speaking about the award, the Fukuoka Prize was established at the city of Fukuoka and by the Yokotopia Foundation.
They confer the individuals every year who make contributions that preserves the Asian culture. In that regard, there are 3 categories under this Prize: The Grand Prize, The Academic Prize and The Arts and Culture Prize. While Rahman has bagged the Grand Prize, a Philippines based historian Ambeth R Ocampo has got the Academic Prize and Yasmeen Lari from Pakistan has been honoured with the Arts and Culture Prize.
